Back in the eighties and nineties, the indie scene was chockablock with short-run Xerox’d ‘zines crammed with political screeds, interviews with indie bands, short stories, street poetry, comics, etc. Control takes us back to that time with its punk aesthetic and content. The mixture of typewriter fonts and scratchy handwriting laid out in black and white on paper cutouts amid artwork, music reviews, poetry and personal reflections makes for a wonderful bit of nostalgia.
The latest issue features an interview with Keith Morris of legendary punk band Black Flag. This is a pretty big get for a publication that has only been around since August of 2020 and is all the more surprising when you consider that Control’s founders Fiona Nudd and Cole Pepper probably weren’t even alive during ‘zines’ heyday.
Oh and Control is also a record label, with its first release of experimental/garage rock band Moms with Bangs that they recorded at Trez Rek Studios.
Issues are only $2 or you can read them as PDFs on the Control website at https://controlbayarea.com. You can also reach the control team via instagram or email them at [email protected]
